How to Maintain Tape in Hair Extensions

How to Maintain Tape in Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are a great way to add length, volume or a new color to your natural hair. The right style for you depends on your lifestyle, preferences and goals. One of the most popular options is tape in hair extensions. They are a quick and easy solution to add thickness or color to your hair and can last up to three months if properly maintained. They are also less damaging than other types of extensions as they do not put any pressure on your natural hair, unlike other forms such as clip ins or fusion.

Tape in hair extensions are thin strips of synthetic or human hair sewn onto a strip of adhesive. They are made in different colors and lengths, and can be cut to create smaller pieces for a subtle highlight effect. They are attached to the head using a strong, low heat glue and can be applied by an experienced stylist or even at home by following the steps below.

Applying a full head of tape in hair extensions is a quick process and can be done in as little as 45 minutes. They are available in a wide range of colors and can be blended into your natural color to create an undetectable seamless look. The most important thing to remember is to be gentle with your extensions. If you pull or tug at them they can come loose, leading to them falling out or getting tangled.

Brush them multiple times a day with a Tangle Teazer or hair extensions brush to keep them looking tangle-free and smooth. Do not comb them because this can cause damage to the bonds, instead gently detangle with the brush by supporting the roots of your hair. Avoid getting your extensions wet if possible, especially not for long periods of time as this can cause them to slip out of place.

Be sure to wait 48 hours before washing your hair to give the adhesive on the tape ins a chance to fully bond to your natural hair. Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and be careful when applying hair treatments such as serums or masks near the bonds to prevent breaking them down. It is important to condition your hair from mid-shaft down but avoid conditioning the bonded area of your hair as this can cause them to become dry and itchy.

It is important to schedule regular salon maintenance appointments every six to eight weeks. During these appointments the tapes will be removed, your hair thoroughly washed and blow dried before they can be reconditioned and reapplied. This is the best way to ensure your extensions are always in good condition and will last longer. Be sure to ask your salon how they will remove the tapes as some use an acetone-based solvent which can cause damage to your natural hair.

During the removal process, you will first need to clean off the residue on the tape ins by generously spraying the glue remover several times over each tab. Once the residue has been removed you will be able to peel off each tape from the weft with ease. If any of the glue is stubborn you can gently run the tab under water to help release it.
